ARCH1202 - MODELLING PORTFOLIO

Throughout this semester, I've started to model more, in order to visualize my concept and design.

Here is the evolution of my design:

This is the first concept model. It was more of a massing model than one that considered spatial aspects. However, one of the later models reflects the planning of the program:

This is my presentation model. Here, you can see that I've tried to display the materiality of the spaces as well as the form:

ARCH1202 - DRAWING PORTFOLIO

Thus ends another semester, and with that, another project.

The Coogee Beach Community Centre provided an opportunity to explore my own presentation and drawing style. It became, in my view a very productive semester.

Here is some of the work I presented:

Additionally, I took this opportunity to work on my drawing of perspectives:

Overall, I feel that I have improved in my drawings. I know I received some comments about not "placing" my building, but I think I did a pretty good shot of it, I included the parkscape that I discussed as well as reflect the residential and built nature of the surrounding landscape. Additionally, I think by hand drawing these, its a lot more "animated" in a way, or at least has more personality. I really enjoyed doing this course and I think that I actually gained a lot in the way and techniques in which to draw.

Here's one of my presentation boards:

Stay tuned tomorrow for photographs of my model!

Exercise II

I've been sketching a lot in the last week, trying to refine my ideas. These are some of my thoughts. And with these drawings I was able to form a 'shape' for my ideas in which to reside in. My concept model is a bit like a massing model. But it does represent some of my thoughts such as letting light into the building and how the building relates to the 'outside'.

These have led to the development of my plans which I've drawn almost like parti diagrams showing the 'lightness' of the walls. Additionally the sections show how the building is stacked upon each later - which will be further explored in developing weeks. I've also considered the construction of the building, looking mainly at the roofing and the concrete structure.

Hopefully, by next week there will be more to look at. But so far, I'll be looking at more of the work by Morphosis, and Zaha Hadid's Contemporary Art Centre for more ideas.

Exercise 2; Part I Submission

The project looked to explore possibilities for our design by looking at a range of different cross sections.

For my cross sections, I looked at an architect whose work I've always admired - Tadao Ando and his Koshino House. One aspect of his designs that I've liked is that he uses a lot of natural light in his design consideration and that he builds into the landscape rather than disturb it. I think it's very interesting to explore within my own design. The cross-section I choose very clearly shows these two ideas.

My second building is a cleverly designed glazed residential building. The simple cross-section shows two boxes stacked on top of each other with obvious indications to it's "heaviness". The buildings arrangement is also obviously considered.

My last example is more of a landscape example. It's a garden - Le Jardin Atlantique, situated above Pasteur Station. Below the garden is carparking as well as access for vehicles. I chose this example because I was very interested in how they designed the space to incorporate into the landscape and become part of the community.

In my initial 1:100 and 1:50 drawings, I looked at the shape of the building and how it will be "grounded" into the site.
I chose to look at the Southern elevation "edge". I drew this edge at 1:20 looking at the interior and exterior spaces.

ARCH1202 - Coogee Beach Community Centre

To initiate our design for the Coogee Beach Community Centre, we started with a four week site analysis in which we explored five concepts of architecture and it's landscape:
  • Reciprocity;
  • Infrastructure;
  • Threshold;
  • Materiality; and
  • Insertion
These concepts will inform our design.

In my presentation of my site analysis, I was more concerned with the relationship between the landscape and the oval, or rather, the contextual influence on the site and it's future design. I was interested in a design that communicates a sense of purpose and community within this prominent area of the physical and communal landscape.

I drew upon some of these words to create my own:

Using these words, I drew up my presentation boards.

I molded a simple concept model, however I think that so much has changed over the last week, it hardly becomes relevant anymore. So, due to it's seemingly unimportance, I've decided not to include it as part of this post.

PORTFOLIO - ARCH1201 Projects 1-3

Project 1 - Artifice
Reconstruction of a modern or contemporary villa as a sectional model by exploring it's spatial qualities. This is further done through parti and poche drawings.

Project 2 - Room and Narrative
Transformation of a domestic interior scene into a series of inhabitable rooms. An exploration of architectonics considering interior and exterior 'containers'.

Nicholaes Maes - The Eavesdropper

Project 3 - Art Gallery, Shop/House
Design of a 'contaminated' form expressed through an art gallery design in the city.
